Cookie Policy

What gets stored on your device, by whom, and how to turn it off.

The short version

The tools themselves need no cookies at all. The only cookies on this site come from advertising, and you can decline them — you'll still see ads, they just won't be personalised.

What a cookie is (and what local storage is)

A cookie is a small file a website stores in your browser and sends back to a server on future requests. Local storage is similar but stays entirely on your device — it is never sent anywhere. We use local storage for preferences and cookies only for advertising.

Strictly necessary — always on

NameTypePurposeDuration
ddt-consentLocal storageRemembers your cookie choice so we stop asking180 days
ddt-themeLocal storageRemembers light or dark modeUntil cleared
ddt-word-counterLocal storageRestores your draft in the word counter after a reloadUntil cleared

None of these are transmitted to us or to anyone else. They exist purely so the site behaves sensibly on your next visit.

Advertising — only with your consent

We use Google AdSense. When you accept advertising cookies, Google and its partners may set cookies including:

NameSet byPurposeDuration
__gadsGoogleMeasures ad interactions and limits how often you see the same adUp to 13 months
__gpiGoogleAd personalisation and measurementUp to 13 months
IDE / test_cookieDoubleClick (Google)Ad delivery and effectiveness measurementUp to 13 months
NIDGoogleStores advertising preferencesUp to 6 months

Exact names and durations are set by Google and can change. Their current list is at policies.google.com/technologies/cookies.

Analytics — only with your consent

Where analytics are enabled, cookies beginning _ga are used to count visits and see which pages are useful. IP addresses are anonymised. Declining analytics cookies has no effect on how the site works.

If you decline

Everything on the site continues to work. Ads still appear — we still need to fund hosting — but they are served in non-personalised mode: chosen based on the content of the page and coarse location rather than any profile of your browsing.

Changing your mind

Two ways:

  • Clear this site's data in your browser settings — the consent banner will reappear on your next visit.
  • Manage advertising preferences directly with Google at Google Ads Settings.

Blocking cookies entirely

Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies — look for “Privacy” or “Site data” in settings. Blocking all cookies may break other websites; it will not break this one.

Industry-wide opt-outs are available at aboutads.info/choices (US) and youronlinechoices.com (EU).
