Countdown to a Date
A live countdown to any date, updating every second, with working days and the milestones along the way.
In short
To count down to a date, subtract now from the target and convert the milliseconds into days, hours and minutes. Working days are more useful than total days for deadlines, since a twenty day gap containing two weekends leaves only fourteen working days.

Why counting days by hand goes wrong
Months have 28, 29, 30 or 31 days, leap years add a day every four years except centuries not divisible by 400, and daylight saving makes two days a year 23 or 25 hours long. Any one of these is enough to put a mental count out by a day.
The reliable method is to convert both dates to a single number, subtract, and convert back. That is what happens above, so the answer accounts for all of it without you having to think about February.
Working days are the number that matters
When a deadline is six weeks away, six weeks is not what you have. Forty two calendar days contain twelve weekend days, leaving thirty working days, and that is before public holidays, annual leave or the days already committed to something else.
The gap between the two numbers grows with the horizon, and it grows in the direction that hurts. A project planned around calendar days is planned around roughly 40% more time than actually exists. This single confusion explains a large share of missed deadlines.
The working day count above excludes Saturdays and Sundays. It does not know your public holidays, so subtract those yourself; in most countries they take another eight or nine days out of the year.
Why a countdown changes behaviour
A deadline three months away is an abstraction. Ninety one days is a quantity, and quantities are harder to ignore.
This is the mechanism behind a good deal of research on temporal framing: people who see a goal expressed in days rather than months or years start acting on it sooner and save more towards it. The unit does not change the interval, but it changes whether the interval feels like something you are inside of.
The same applies in reverse. Counting up from a start date makes accumulated progress visible, which is why day counts appear in habit trackers, sobriety apps and training logs. Two hundred and eleven days is a fact you can hold on to on a bad afternoon.
Useful things to count down to
- Deadlines. Coursework, tax filing, notice periods, tender submissions. Look at the working day figure, not the calendar one.
- Trips. Anticipation is a genuine part of the value of a holiday, and research on happiness suggests the weeks before often deliver more of it than the days during.
- Renewals. Insurance, tenancy breaks, notice windows and fixed-rate mortgage ends. These have narrow windows and expensive defaults, and they are the ones people miss.
- Events. Birthdays, weddings, exams, race day. Useful for working backwards to when preparation actually has to start.
- Anniversaries. Set a past date and it counts up instead.
Working backwards from the date
A countdown becomes a plan when you subtract the work from it. If a submission needs three weeks of writing, one week of review and two days of formatting, that is twenty two working days, so a deadline thirty working days out gives eight days of slack, not thirty.
Doing this subtraction early is uncomfortable and almost always worth it, because the moment when a deadline turns out to be impossible is far cheaper to discover in week one than in the final week.
Frequently asked questions
How do I count the days until a date?
Subtract today from the target date and divide the difference in milliseconds by 86,400,000. Doing it in your head is unreliable because months have different lengths and leap years shift things, which is why almost everyone counting manually is a day out.
What is the difference between days and working days?
Working days exclude weekends, so a 20 day gap containing two weekends leaves only 14 working days. For deadlines this is the number that matters, and it is typically about 30% smaller than the total, which is why projects planned in calendar days run late.
Does this keep counting if I leave the page open?
Yes, it updates every second. Everything runs in your browser, so no date you enter is ever sent anywhere.
Why does the countdown say a different number of days than my calendar app?
Usually because of time of day. A date 30 days away at midnight is 29 days and some hours away at 3pm. This tool counts down to the start of the target day unless you set a time, and shows the remainder in hours and minutes rather than rounding it away.
Does it handle dates in the past?
Yes, it counts up instead, which is useful for anniversaries, sobriety dates, how long since a job started or how long a habit has held.
